4×100 Relay

The 4 × 100 metres relay or sprint relay is an athletics track event run in lanes over one lap of the track with four runners completing 100 metres each. The first runners must begin in the same stagger as for the individual 400 m race. A relay baton is carried by each runner and must be passed within a 20 m changeover box (usually marked by yellow lines) which extends 10 m on either side of each 100 m mark of the race. Another line is marked 10 m further back, marking the earliest point at which the outgoing runner may begin (giving up to 10 m of acceleration before entering the passing zone)

4×400 Relay

The 4 × 400 metres relay or long relay is an athletics track event in which teams consist of four runners who each complete 400 metres or one lap. It is traditionally the final event of a track meet. At top class events, the first 500 metres is run in lanes. Start lines are thus staggered over a greater distance than in an individual 400 metres race; the runners then typically move to the inside of the track.

Competition Events Information

9/8/17 NOTE: Early Bird registration deadline for the CFFR has been EXTENDED to Friday, September 15th, 2017. Hurry- register your child or relay team TODAY! (See registration details below.)

The CFFR is open to athletes ages 3 and above. Athletes aged middle school and older can compete in the 4X100-Meters, the 4X400-Meters, and the distance medley relay (DMR), which is comprised of a 1200-meter leg, a 400-Meter leg, an 800-Meter leg, and a 1600-Meter leg. For younger athletes (ages 3 to 11), four individual sprint races are offered based on age:

30-meter dash (ages 3-4, boys and girls combined)

60-meter dash (ages 5-6, boys and girls combined)

80-meter dash (ages 7-8, boys and girls combined)

100-meter dash (ages 9-11, boys and girls combined)

Athletes middle school-age and older can register for the relay events based on the options and parameters indicated on the Divisions and Categories Table (view/download here). For the relay events, it is recommended that each team have 5 runners: 4 to comprise the core team, and 1 alternate runner to run in place of one of the main 4 in the event of injury or other unforeseen events.

The CFFR dash and relay events will run on a “rolling” schedule, meaning that each event listed on the Race Day Schedule (view here) will occur immediately following completion of the event before it, regardless of the time indicated next to it. Therefore, participants are advised to plan to arrive for their event with enough time to pick up their child or relay team’s athlete’s packet at the Registration table and warm-up, in case the schedule runs ahead.

All athletes ages 3 to 11 who participate in the individual sprint races earn a participation ribbon if they are registered before the day of the race. Young athletes who register on Race Day are, regrettably, not guaranteed a ribbon. The top three finishers in each of the dashes earn an additional prize.

In the relay events, members of the top three teams in each event category earn a beautifully-crafted medal, and the team posting the fastest overall time in each event earns an additional prize.

Besides registering to run, CFFR participants can help the event’s fundraising effort by collecting pledges (download the CFFR Pledge Form here or from the Forms, Flyers, & Tables menu above). Individuals raising $25 or more earn a free event T-shirt, and the relay team raising the highest pledge amount earns 4 $50 gift certificates to Dick’s Sporting Goods! To be considered for prizes, individuals and teams raising pledges must submit their forms and payment to the LIFE Community Center, or mail them, postmarked no later than Friday, September 15th, 2017, with check donations ONLY, to: LIFE Community Center, 2500 W. Sunset Drive, Carbondale, IL, 62901.

Registration fees for the relay events are $60 per team per event and $5 for each children’s dash event for participants who register by the Early Bird deadline of September 9th, 2017. For participants registering between September 10th, 2017, and September 23rd, 2017 (Race Day), fees are $70 per team for each relay event and $10 for each children’s dash event. PLEASE NOTE: For participants registering on Race Day, only cash payment will be accepted.

Relay teams and parents of individual young athletes may register for the CFFR by downloading the event Registration Form  (available here) and CFFR Waiver of Liability (available here), and completing and submitting them with the payment due by cash or check (addressed to Carbondale Park District/CFFR) in person at the Carbondale Park District’s LIFE Community Center at 2500 West Sunset Drive in Carbondale, Illinois, 62901, or by mailing forms with check payments only to the same address. (Please do not mail cash payments with registration forms.)

Interested participants are strongly encouraged to register using the downloadable paper registration form, available here and under the Forms, Flyers, and Tables link under the main menu, in-person at the LIFE Community Center, or by mail.
